Group Homes for Troubled Teens | Lava Heights Academy Group Homes for Troubled Teens | Boys & Girls

Lava Heights Academy is a performing arts program for troubled teens that operates differently than group homes.  We are known as a residential treatment center and our therapy is facilitated with the use of arts.  We share some similarities to group in the sense that we care for struggling youths but we pride ourselves in providing an environment tailored particularly to each and every troubled boys and girls in our program.

Our residential treatment program serves youths with significant psychiatric or substance abuse problems who have proven to be incapable of being in their home environments.  They have been unsuccessful in programs such as day treatment and other non-secure environments such as group homes but they do not yet need to be placed in a psychiatric hospital or secure correctional facility.  Most of the struggling adolescents we care for are from good caring families who are simply not equipped to treat and help their child.

Group Homes originated as a way to provide dignity to individuals suffering with different psychiatric and mental disorders.  They were established to serve these individuals as if they were still in their own homes.  It started as an outcry due to the fact that individuals with disabilities should be able to perform and interact in society while receiving treatment.

Programs that serve troubled teens have started to implement this model of a group home to better serve the boys and girls afflicted by different struggles associated with adolescence and growing up.  The implementation of group homes for troubled teens started as a way to help these children transition from home to a new environment.  It is a way of providing treatment and structures in a home-like environment.

Most group homes are set as a mediator or a facilitator since struggling teens residing there often share a communal space but their therapy, education and vocational needs are taken care of by third parties.  The individuals that run the group homes simply facilitate the interaction between troubled teens and the services.

Due to the location of most group homes, it became a necessity to structure group homes in a manner conducive to troubled teens who are capable of living in less restrictive areas.  Group homes are not always a good solution for teens in crisis.  Some teens are incapable of handling the freedom often associated with group homes.  Often they relapse due to unhealthy interaction found outside of the group home.  Because therapy is conducted outside of the home, teens can generally circumvent or avoid dealing with their issues, which renders their being sent to a group home useless.

Lava Heights Serves Struggling Teens

Lava Heights Academy serves troubled teens acting out due to emotional abuse, grief or other traumatic events that they have suffered.  Our strength is in helping troubled teens dealing with identity issues.  Our program is suitable for helping teens who suffer with various mental issues due to their inability to harness their true sense of self.

We have found that at the root of a lot of teen issues there is a difficulty in understand the self.  Adolescents struggle to figure out who they truly are.  After a divorce for example, some teens usually struggle to regain their identity because a lot sense of self that they knew was rooted in their family structure; once this event happens, teens often feel out place and start to rebel by partaking in destructive behaviors.  Some of the negative behaviors they exhibit come in various forms such as substance abuse, alcohol usage, or lack of interest in school. They may employ different methods to also get attention from their parents; some teens may become bulimic or anorexic as a mean to regain their sense of self.  Others will become bullies or make use of excessive anger to express their frustration.

We also treat teens who suffer from various disorders that are out of their control: bipolar disorders, borderline personality disorders, and ADD/ADHD.  We provide them with a creative outlet to express the frustration that these disorders can cause.

Though we are far from being a group home, we provide an environment that focuses solely on our teens.  There are not third parties involved, and we are witness to every success and struggle.  We encourage you contact our program even if your search was originally for group homes.  Call us at 1-866-452-8772.

Staff | What our staff say

Our movement is our behavior allowing ourselves to express smoothly and openly, means finding our CORE movement is a medicine for creating change in a person’s physical, emotional and mental states.

-Nate Meng

Posture is also part of our emotional anatomy; how we hold ourselves somatically is related to how we hold ourselves emotionally and psychologically.

-Clyde Ford

Performing artists are constantly being judged and measured, not only by others, but by themselves.  Self-observation (awareness) is itself the beginning of transformation.

-Dennis Lewis

Drama showed me how to interact with others.  Most of all, it gave me a way to have excitement in my life without the use of drugs.
